In about three or four weeks I'm getting my wisdom teeth removed. I'm scared... I heard they knock you out for a while while they remove them, and afterwards, it hurts. Again, I'm scared...

Have you gotten them removed yet, or if you have, how was it?

I had my wisdom teeth removed last year. I wasn't knocked out but had local anesthetic in my mouth (the needles were not pleasant). The experience was not too great since I could still feel the tugging and hear the cracking of my teeth and the taste/smell of burning flesh made me want to vomit.

Afterwards it does hurt. In fact it was probably the worst pain I experienced in my life up to now. You also can't eat solid food for a few days to a week, cleaning your mouth/teeth is difficult (but very important) and for the first day or two you have to be careful to not dislodge any bloodclots if you didn't get stitches. There are likely other annoyances that I've forgotten by now.

It was kind of a big deal for me but I guess it doesn't have to be for you or others. Have fun!

My wisdom teeth have come in already, kinda half assed because I need them pulled badly. One came in half way and one came in all the way (both hurt >_>) and two are completely horizontal and will never come in.

Why haven't I had them removed yet? Scared, lol.

If your parents can afford it, get a general, because when I got mine out I got a local because it was cheap and my health insurance covered it, but it was one of the most horrific experiences I have ever had. The only good thing about a local is that your mouth doesn't puffer up so you can still do your day to day activities like going to work and stuff immediately after your wisdoms are extracted, but if you're still in school might as well take the week off.

Don't eat muesli bars or rice or any other grainy stuff for at least 2 months after your operation. Don't rinse out your mouth after the operation vigorously and DO NOT BRUSH YOUR TEETH FOR AT LEAST A WEEK. Use salt water to swirl it gently around your mouth. (no doubt your doctor will tell you all this anyway, but once I felt so disgusting I brushed my teeth anyway and RE OPENED THE WOUND and I was bleeding for a million years.)

Anyway I'm now terrified of the dentist because of my wisdom teeth removal. You're just chilling in the dentists chair, he injects your mouth with anesthetic, you can't feel a thing BUT then you see him fiddling around with his mini pizza cutter that was edges and spins around at five thousand k's an hour, and then he puts it to your teeth and you can heear the RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR echoing your ear, you know that he is cutting up your gum and then RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR he is cutting up your teeth, but the teeth is stubborn so he pushes it everywhere, then the assistant says "oh my god there's no much blood" and the dentist says "QUICK SUCK IT" and im sitting there thinking "oh god what if he accidentally chops of my goddamn tongue and i can't give good... er.. (never mind) anymore.. for the rest of my life.."

@DragonPhoenix: O_o

I had gum surgery last year, so I know how you guys feel about the local anesthetic. It really gets surreal when you can't feel your face, and I kept feeling my chin because it felt like it was swollen (it wasn't). According to my orthodontist, I need to get my wisdom teeth removed this summer, so yay... I'm really not looking forward to it. After my gum surgery, I accidentally missed my tylenol dosage by an hour. Not even realizing this, I just kept surfing the net. Within 30 minutes, I was in so much effing pain that all I could do was sit there with my gums bleeding and tears leaking out of my eyes. When my dad realized what was up, and I got the painkillers, it quickly went away. TYLENOL IS YOUR BEST FRIEND.

But really, if you do everything your dentist says, you should be fine. If you're scared, ask if you can get knocked out; the actual surgery doesn't bother me, so just general anesthetic works pretty well (if you do this, there's still the possibility of falling asleep; I did, but I was also calm, which is the key here).

So, yeah... Oral surgery of any sort is not pleasant.

Got them out several hours ago. It was really weird.

First they put a gas mask or something over your nose and soon you start to feel like you're really high. And you have weird visions with your eyes closed. And suddently you're in a totally different room.

It's a lot less scary than I thought but my mouth hurts now, it keeps on bleeding, and I even threw up. And I have to keep these cotton-like things back in my mouth to stop bleeding, which can get annoying.

AND THIS IS THE LAST BIG THING WITH MY TEETH!!

Who's to say you won't become edentulous or have other dental predicaments in the future? :p

Well it sounds like you had fun during the operation. The continuous bleeding and vomitting is a little worrisome, though. Of course bleeding is expected but perhaps you are not biting hard enough on the cotton or have it inserted incorrectly? Whatever you do, just follow your dentist's advice.

I found out about a month ago that I had wisdom teeth growing. Being the only person in my family to have them I was rather shocked. One of my friends got her wisdoms out right before grad photos, she looked like a chipmunk :P

They knocked me out for mine. It was rather funny, actually. They told me they were putting the IV in, then gave me the breathing mask and told me to just relax. A minute later, the surgeon asks how I'm feeling, and with complete mental clarity, I answer that I'm actually doing fine. He sounds a little surprised, turns around and fiddles with some knobs. 5 seconds later, he asks "And how about now?" I manage to answer "No, still feeling pretty g-" and next thing I know I'm in a completely different room and my mouth is a little sore.

Afterwards, I camped out on the couch popping giant tylenol/codeines and BAN ME PLEASE, watching the first season of LOST.

I was a little sore for a while, but it wasn't that bad for the most part. Most important thing is to keep them clean and follow directions like not using straws. I made the mistake of having mac & cheese and got a noodle stuck in one of the holes. Nothing could get it out, so finally 3 days later I bent up a paperclip and fished it out. It was disgusting, and I ended up cutting up my gums a bit with the paperclip, but nothing could dislodge the noodle.

Having had more than 20 teeth pulled in my lifetime (4 wisdom, 6 adult, and somewhere around 14 baby teeth - I honestly lost count), I'd say the wisdom teeth were probably the most pleasant of the procedures, but the recovery time is longer, and you have to take more exacting care of yourself afterwards. Really though, it's a very non-invasive surgery, and not as dramatic as a lot of people make it out to be. I was a little nervous heading into it, but it was rather unfounded.

I haven't had any problems with my wisdom teeth thus far, as in they haven't been coming in. I have seen various results from people having their wisdom teeth removed in the range like they were fine the next day and went back to being their normal selves to being in a lot of pain for about a week. Though if I do have to get mine removed I will be deadly afraid of it because I am afraid of the dentist.

Well in a few months im going in to see what has to be done to get mine out. IM freakin out and my parents think im over reacting. I really dont like pain or seeing blood, or I guess tasting it in this case. All I can hope for is that they come aout with very little trouble. . .

What a subject to talk about and I can tell you one thing after I read all those experiences – I am dreading if I ever have to go to the dentist to get my wisdom teeth pulled out!! The only times I’ve ever been to the dentists was to have my teeth cleaned and of course, my annual; check up!!

You've never had problems with your teeth? I'm impressed. I've had five teeth pulled, and it wasn't that bad, so I'm not too worried about getting my wisdom teeth out, more so about what happens afterward. Thank God it's going to be a long time before that happens.

I get to get my wisdom teeth out... tomorrow. Yay... But what surprised me the most was the fact that they said it's a really short process; 30 minutes to take the teeth out, then another 20-30 for the gas to wear off and stuff (they call it recovery, but I don't think my mouth will feel better that fast :p).

Okay, this may be a stupid thing to ask, but is it necessary to get your wisdom teeth out? And if so, why?

I don't even know if mine have come in yet, but I should probably figure that out as well.

The only problem I've ever had [naturally] with my teeth was a cavity in my last baby-tooth.

Other than that, I managed to get three chipped teeth from a fixed boxing match against a bully that was about twice my size [literally]. And because of that, the dentist put some temporary fillings on, but they were TEMPORARY, and they came off pretty easily actually just through daily life. now I've got teeth that are sharp enough to pierce ears without meaning to [it was a night with my girlfriend (now an ex)...].

The answer to this question varies from person to person. For me I need em out becuase I dont have room for them, and they are casuing me pain (DANG FREAKIN PULSING PAIN).

Generally speaking mine didnt start coming until... im gonna say 2 years to a year ago (either 18 or 19). Im gonna say that if your under 18 dont worry, but again everyone is different. If your curious, ask your dentist.

I'm 19 right now. And I dunno if going to my dentist just to ask a question is a good idea. Since I turned 18 I've been uninsured [health-wise] Because my grandpa's plan wouldn't cover me after being 18 and that was about the same time he retired from his 30 years in a job as well.

So as far as I know I'm still uninsured and that'll make even going to the dentist pretty expensive, no?

It was not all that bad, surprisingly. My gum surgery last year hurt way more than this. Basically, they started out with hooking me up to a heart monitor machine thingy (has the little squiggly lines on it). Then a nurse came in and inserted a small IV into my arm. If they tell you that it only feels like a pinch, they're lying; it feels like a shot (which isn't all that bad, but I was a little surprised). Next, the doctor came in and put this thing over my nose, which the oxygen/laughing gas would come through. He was in the middle of explaining things to me and putting in the little thing that keeps your mouth open when he started the gas. I was out like a frickin' light within 15 seconds. Next thing I remember is lying down in the car.

Apparently, when my brother and mom came in after they finished, I was pretty out of it. I kept saying, "I'm so **** out of it," in a voice that (apparently) made me sound like I was about to cry. Pretty hilarious; I want to know what the doctors thought :p.

Right now, I'm sitting in bed, not in much pain at all. I got Percocet, which konks me out when I take two of them; but that and/or Motrin work pretty well at reducing the pain. My bleeding's already stopped, which is good. So, yeah... Not that bad at all, although eating even yogurt is a pain in the ass. Eating ice cream and jello is much easier than pudding and yogurt.

Oh, Jiggz, I told my mom not to feed me mac'n'cheese, based on your experience. It worked, so thanks for the heads-up :D

not everyone needs to get their wisdoms out, it depends on whether your teeth are stupid or not, if they grow out naturally and straight up then you don't need to get them extracted. Teeth that grow sideways or at an angle can collide with your existing molars and create cavities, lots of pain, rotten teeth, et ceterararara, and all that shizz, so its really best to get an xray to see if you need to get them removed or not. Anyhow people should be going to the dentist at least once every two years anyway... don't you think..?

The Navy pulled my wisdom teeth back in about 1975. They pretty much pull everyone's just so they don't become a problem later on. They pulled the 2 on the right side (local anasthetic only), then 3 weeks later did the other side. That was a completely suck-ass couple of months. Oh, and they also always scheduled wisdom tooth pullings (a bunch of us had to go through it) on Fridays so we would miss a minimum of time in our schools (basic electronics school).
