Do you think that Gyarados should stay water/flying or be a water/dragon type?

Water/Dragon seems to make alot more sense, especially since Gyarados really has nothing to do with Flying type..

It should be a dragon instead of a flying. It has no wings it can't fly and on the other hand it looks like a dragon and it learns dragon moves.Get the picture

Magikarp evolves into Gyarados at level 20. They probably made Gyarados a non-Dragon so you can't get a Dragon type that early in the game, back in RBY. After all, Dragon types are meant to be elusive, like the Dratini family, which you could only get in the later part of the game. Their original intention could also be to make the Dratini more unique, being the only Dragon types in the game back then.

Gyarados and Magikarp are based on the old myth that when a carp reaches 100 years old, it transforms into a dragon, so it would make sense that it would be part dragon type.

However, I agree with Snowball. In RBY, dragons were VERY rare and elusive. Now, they're a dime a dozen, but back then, only the Dragonite family was special enough to be of the dragon type and Lance was the only trainer besides yourself lucky enough to have one. So I don't think it should change, because its a throwback to an era where we didn't have so many dragons.

Gyarados is most likely flying because it floats, but ultimatly it would make better sense if it was dragon.

Then again, the dragon transformed was a long-body creature which was able to fly without wings, so the Water/Flying combo is also acceptable and somehow fitting (even though I don't remember seeing Gyarados flying, unlike Dragonair).

But yeah, I also agree with sN0w on that part. It would just be too easy if you could have a dragon in the very beginning of the game.

Well, Gyarados still belongs to the Dragon family breeding group, so it still bears some Dragon characteristics.

By what it is, it's a Water/Dragon type; as in, that's what its physical appearance and abilities suggest. However, in order to make the Dragon type a little bit more sought after, Gyarados is a Water/Flying type. It flies in the anime series by wafting through the air like a wave with its long, thick tail. It never made sense to me, either, but I believe it was indeed to cause people to desire Dragon types more.

I never understood why he was water/flying. Ever. Never ever. Nope. Not even then...
