As the topic name suggests; how do you play your game from start to finish before beating the Champion? What quirks do you have? Or, what restrictions do you place on yourself? Do you even care or just play the game without thinking too much about it?

For me, I always turn battle effects off in Options, only until I get up to the Elite Four or before the Champion battle, and switch the dialogue setting to fast the first chance I get. I sometimes reset my new game for an ID number I like. Since beating Diamond, and one time after beating SoulSilver once, I've always traded over level 1s breeded to the new game with my chosen natures with good or subpar IVs, traded over with Power items, Lucky Egg, and Exp. Share and at least one pokemon with PokeRus. I never run tanks in the metagame so basically I almost always have all sweepers. Basically, if I can't get a pokemon in-game very early I tend to breed to the new game anyway. I'm conscious over EVs to a point, but I don't care for the 4 points in another stat as recommended, so it's mainly 255/255 in each pokemon when I'm ready to continue. Pokemon team-wise, I try to think up a team I want beforehand (pokemon which I haven't used before, or older pokemon who have improved in the new game thanks to abilities/moves and whatnot), with at least one pokemon I'm familiar with if it's available to that game. Saying that, I only train pokemon, that to me, are likeable or who I'm fond of. I always give nicknames to every one of my pokemon if they're on a particular team.

Edit; Moreover with nicknames (because it is one of my biggest quirks), usually when I plan a team, I pan out what nickname choices I want them to be. References from video games I've played (mostly Final Fantasy, like my Infernape - Zidane), friends (online or close, I think I had two Krisps at one point in different games lol), or just ones I find cool (Reuniclus - Squishy), and of course roleplays I've been in on the forum (Gallade - Red). Because of this, at least the ones with the 50/50 chance of being either male or female, I try to get the perfect gender, UNLESS they are the hardest to breed and hatch. For example Rhyhorn and Gabite, who I would've wanted originally male, I nicknamed after females who I wasn't crazy about and stopped breeding simply because it's IVs were perfect for me, and who would've guess my Rhyperior named Christina turned out to be one of my favourite pokemon, nickname and all.

When I do try to catch a legendary, which is very, VERY rare, I'll always get the correct Synchronized natured pokemon first. And when I do catch it, unless I have a reference to it (like once upon a time my Omegamew in Pokemon Stadium), I'd never actually use it in battle at all.

I think I have tons more.

The first time I play a generation, I genally do a normal playthrough; taking my time, catching any new pokemonand just enjoying the game. But after that, I will make up a team before hand and breed it on another game. I never give my pokemon nicknames; due to force of habit and lack of creativity. I tend to use all sweepers; I hate stalling and getting stalled.

After my first playthrough I generally only play for challanges (nuzlocke for example) or to catch more legendaries.

Before I start a new game, I choose one pokemon I will be training.
Then I start my game, using only my starter. And I capture my chosen pokemon on the first occasion.
Then I do the rest of the game with only this pokemon, even the league.
I usually choose a pokemon who is fast and can 1 hit KO on first turn. (Ex: {rapidash}, {gardevoir}, {pidgeot}, etc.

Try it out, its a great challenge. ;)

One i was a youngster playing Blue i played like you should do by not knowing anything to come so you train up your Pokemon higher ready for any challenge and once completed the game i traded with my sister (who had Yellow) and then i trained her Pokemon for her too as all i needed was my Mewtwo, Blastoise & Nidoking to beat the Elite 4 so the other 3 spaces were filled with Pokemon that i was training and simply used the item exp all/share which ever one it was back then i cant remember.

But now a days i use walkthroughs so i dont miss an item and i know what ahead so i can plan for it be it which Pokemon will lead the party for a trainer or for me to plan my strategy for the next gym. Most the time i carry Pokemon of various types so i have a wide range ok Pokemon i can easily beat only times i make exceptions to this is when come up against a gym i specially train some Pokemon just for the gym so my Pokemon tend to be quite a few levels lower than who im facing but means i dont have to train them as much so i can get on with the story.

I don't use "uber" Pokemon, I don't calculate stat values, I don't use cheating devices, I don't breed my way to perfection, and I don't care about natures.
I catch my Pokemon the way they are, and treat them like individuals instead of brainless drones.
