When you want to flee from a battle with a wild pokemon you can't always escape. Does anyone know what factors are involved? For example, a high level pokemon always seems to be able to escape. But then for lower levels it seems a bit random. Is there a simple answer?

I believe the two factors are speed and level; I have no idea how exactly they interract to get the result.

In crystal, my level 92 typhlosion for some reason couldn't escape from a level 44 rapidash. I was like 'omfg'. I clicked run again and I got away safely.
It's most likely completely random, but with a very higher chance of succcessfully fleeing when your a high level

I don't think it's random. My lv 52 Arcanine escaped from a lv 49 Persian while my lv 50 Marowak couldn't. So i think it has something to do with speed. And there are items that raise your escaping chances and pokemon abilieties that deny this completly.

I kind of believe it's something like Lethal Virus suggested. There is obviously some kind of probability going on since sometimes you cant escape one turn (or even several in a row) and then can on the next. I think the probability of escaping gets higher the higher your speed is. There might be something to do with level as well, although it would be hard to tell since your speed obviously goes up as your level increases.
The reason I think it is speed is that when I was EV training a Treecko against Dittos in Emerald I was running away from all the Whismurs and Loudreds without any problems, even though it was holding a Macho Brace. But when training a Shroomish in the same place it could hardly ever escape until it got to about level 20. Even then it was getting stuck every 1 in 4 times or so.
I just thought that with all the detailed explanations of hidden numbers and how they effect things like shininess, gender, etc there might be a "scientific" explanation.
Thanks everyone for your thoughts

Pokemon with special abillites, such as "Arena Trap" prevent you from escaping, (e.g Trapinch, Wobbuffet and etc...) other that that, I'm going to assume, that it has something to do with Speed, or it is completely Random. For me, this mostly happens, when I end up battling with wild Zubats/Golbats, and those two really have high Speed in their stats. So that is a small clue. Even a wild Level 44 Rapidash is pretty fast. Though My Level 40-60 Pokeon Team, can always escape from weak wild Pokemon, that are between Level 2-10.

It's speed and level. This is something I've payed close attention to and I've come to this conclusion a long time ago.

ok guys, thanks for the ideas. but im not after a vague answer like "speed and level". i know its "something to do with speed and level" or at least im convinced of it.
this site has heaps of really precise information such as how hidden random numbers determine the gender of a pokemon and so on. there are also mathematical formulas which allow the damage caused by an attack to be calculated, and ways to determine the type and base power of a Pokemon hidden power simply by entering in their DVs.
im really after an answer which tells me exactly how it works - the exact role played by statistics such as the speed and level of your pokemon and the wild pokemon. maybe one of the site operators knows??[/i]

I think its randomness slightly effected by speed

If it does involve speed and level, how come I can't run away from the
wild Pokemon in the Battle Pyramid with my Sceptile which is MUCH faster
than them?
