Post subject:  Spamming (UPDATED 3/23/05, EVERYBODY READ)

This is a very important post to all those who have a bad, bad habit of posting pointless replies or topics. This is known as SPAM. I've told the moderators to be strict with this and if they see ANY posts that they think is spam, they will immediately delete it.

By the way, this will instantly reduce your post count. It's not our problem if you're stuck on Bug Catcher forever :) And learn to use the EDIT button too.

Repeated offenses may earn a ban. And if things get out of hand, we might implement a "name and shame" policy.

You have been warned. I'm dead serious about this.

From Frost:
If somebody comes in here posting nonsense like this "~YouCan'tStopThePokepimp~," guy, DO NOT REPLY TO HIS POSTS. Replying just adds more useless posts to delete when a mod or admin arrives for clean up.

I'll add all these terms to the FAQs thread for those of you who don't know what we're talking about. Please read the FAQs if you are new to the forums!

What is name and shame?

Where any person on the board is invited to publically post names of people who are spamming. As for the shame part.. well, we might create a special user rank for spammers :D

And would this apply to these people that join and respond to EVERY topic, answer everyone's questions no matter how many times and how long ago they were already answered, and/or simply repeat what's already been said? (Yes, I do have someone in mind.)

That could be fun though maybe just a warning then a ban might do. I am about to post an 'Anti-Spamming Tips' in the help section, if you see anyone spam please inform them of thread such as this and that.

I just thought I'd make a quick official announcement on this matter:

Today is Wednesday, March 23rd. I'm on Spring Break through Monday, March 28th. If I have to spend my Spring Break cleaning up SPAM, I will not be happy. I'm on vacation; I will not hesitate to snap. My vacation time will not be used to clean up after human stupidity. So, if anyone makes a SPAM post, and another mod doesn't beat me to dealing with it, I will be a VERY angry mod.

That being said, anyone else out there on Break, enjoy it as much as I'm trying to. :)

If the Mods/Admins don't mind, I have something to say.

Sorry. When people like that post, the urge to make them feel like crap pounces at my gizzard, (The Guardian's of Ga'hoole). I have the urge. TonberryKing and TCM, in fact all of the "higher authority" have taught me to refrain from it. Thanks. And I will not do anything of the sort again.

It doens't make you guys happy, and it doesn't make other members very happy. (I don't think) So I'm scraping my plate clean, and going in for a better serving, to be a better person.

Thank you.

If the Mods don't mind I'd like to post a few definitions of spam.

Spam (noun) : Unsolicited e-mail, often of a commercial nature, sent indiscriminately to multiple mailing lists, individuals, or newsgroups; junk e-mail.

Also...

A trademark used for a canned meat product consisting primarily of chopped pork pressed into a loaf.

But here's the most intriguing one...

To post irrelevant or inappropriate messages to one or more Usenet newsgroups, mailing lists, or other messaging system in deliberate or accidental violation of netiquette.

Just wanted to post that in a desperate attempt to reduce this "spam" that we speak of.

EDIT: Also, here's the definition of necromancy...

Necromancy (noun): The practice of supposedly communicating with the spirits of the dead in order to predict the future; Black magic; sorcery; Magic qualities.

But here's another one I found...

The belief in magical spells that harness occult forces or evil spirits to produce unnatural effects in the world; conjuring up the dead, especially for prophesying.

Makes you think doesn't it?

Just a small suggestion, instead of deleting threads/posts, you could just create an invisible titled "trash" or something like that, and just move everything there. That way, your board's post count doesn't decrease.

Author:  Jigglypuff [ Mon Apr 18, 2005 2:27 pm ]
Post subject:

No, the loss of post count is quite intentional. If you think you can spam your way to a better rank, you are sadly mistaken ;P

Author:  Skull Kid [ Mon Apr 18, 2005 5:49 pm ]
Post subject:

I didn't mean that at all. I meant the forums' post count. Spamming's not my thing. :P

I'm not sure if you can do it with PHPBB or not, but you can simply set the recycle bin so post counts do not count in there, so the members' post count would decrease in the result of it being moved in there. I know that's possible in VBulletin though.

i dont like pork and what does this have to do with necromancy can you bring back my blaziken in ruby (i deleted it)

JIGGZ: And this, ladies and gentlemen, is the PERFECT definition of a SPAM post. In fact, it's such a perfect example, I'm going to leave it rather than delete.

Necromancy is what they call bringing back dead posts.

I thought spamming was like, ruinning a surprise (for example, telling everyone what will happen in future pokemon episodes, when they werent yet released).

Am I confusing things? :?

Personally I think we should have a forum called 'Unknown Dungeon' like the NB forums where a ridiculously stupid (or just stupid) post is sent so not only can new users learn but also this can be an alternate Name and Shame pollicy.

I agree to an extent. But what about new members? We don't want to drive them away, however we want to remain firm in Psypokes Forum policies. That could be a resort used later on.

Oh sheesh. I think I am guilty. Very guilty. I used to go around and post on everything in sight and that's partly how I got 5 ranks in less than 4 months.

And I think I am also guilty of causing another spammer + necromancer. 371T3 asked me "How do you become a Cooltrainer?" when he first joined and I told him, "Post like crazy." I think he misinterpreted me because later RL told me that he was reviving a lot of old topics.

And I agree with steinerrecliner. The Unknown Dungeon is quite a good idea. I've been to the NB forums and taken a good look at it. You will be surprised at what they think up just to get post count. But speaking of post count, sending posts to the Unknown Dungeon wouldn't decrease the spammer's post count, and their objective would have been achieved anyway no matter where the thread is sent. Deleting, on the other hand, would decrease post count but then new ppl wouldn't get to see what NOT to do.

So it's really up to the mods & E4.

There is a MOD that phpbb created that they could download. It enables you to pick certain forums that when they post in their count stays the same. This ranks thing is getting out of hand. I have a friend that's asking, "How many until this...", and my friends at school accuse me of Spamming here. Who cares if I have 1000 posts? I feel priveledged just being here. To be honest with you, the only time post count goes through my mind is when I hit a Milestone. Granted there was a few times when I posted stupid messages, but that is behind me. So those who are accusing me of Spamming, and that is currently 2 people that I won't mention, you're Spamming. And it also proves, that you really don't care about the discussion, you just want a higher rank.

Heck, darkmind has 13 (?) posts, and she could come in here and ban us all. So make sure you see, post count doesn't give you authority, it doesn't make you a veteran. It just tells how many posts you have, nothing more. Abusing that amkes you look dumb.

Me too. I never bothered about my post count until i hit another rank. Post count is just a way of seeing how active you are on the forum, and also the "Posts per day" in your profile. But that's it.

(Note: Supreme jealousy to WPM, Dragonfan and Truestar for being poke-profs anyway.)
