I think utility is better, but Im having second thoughts. Just to clear things up:
Synergy: when a team works together, relies on each other, and takes a heavy loss if one faints. an example of this is a baton pass team.
Utility: when a team doesnt really do anything for each other, an example team would look like:
Weavile, Garchomp, alakazam, porygon Z, Blissey, Skarmory
these dont work with each other, they just switch in at different times. They each do thier own think and dont have anything to do with one another.
I was just wondering which ones better. In most places its utility, unless the strategy is THAT GOOD.

Honestly it's a balance of both. Taking your 'utility team'. They have synergy in that they each can cover something someone else can't. Weavile can't take a hit, but Skarm/Bliss are there to take it for it as long as you predict right. Blissey takes special hits well while skarm takes physical hits well. Garchomp is a good physical sweeper, and p-z is a good special sweeper. The team is far from perfect as I think zam and p-z have overlapping jobs, but the point is utility doesn't mean you have to sacrifice synergy. A good team has both in spades.

Rane pretty much just summed up everything.

I don't really use a team. I just mix and match the Pokemon I have trained.

I prefer Synergy, notably the infamous Gyar/Vire combo. But every team shuld have some utility.

Most people's teams are utility... but your definition of synergy is off a little.
Any team can take a heavy loss if a poke faints, but they can rely on one another. For example, Skarmory can rely on Blissey in the case of special attacks, maybe an Arcanine in the face of fire, and Electivire in the eminent threat of electricity. Those are a bunch of commonly used "Utility" pokes, but rely on each other quite well.

I prefer synergy, though I don't really use it. Mines more of a "not dependent but can do good things for the other Pokemon" team. If you get a good stable synergy structure then it's very hard to take down, especially if your weakest link is so for a reason, eg. explosion, destiny bond, healing wish etc. [/i]

Any great team's pokemon are individually good but the whole equals more than the sum of the parts.
Each pokemon should compliment the team without the team becoming Dependant on it. This is very difficult be something that should be considered.
Then again, there's no crime in making a baton pass team for fun.

you can have both such as.
bronzong@leftovers
-stealth rock
-hypnosis
-explosde
-gyro ball/light screen/reflect
sleeps the first pokemon, set ups rox and screens for support then switches into a sweeper. If the opposing team decides to send out blissey or skarm you send out magnezone or dugtrio to blow them away while taking almost no damage due to screens and easily k0-ing them after stealth rock damage, then attempt to sweep.
