hey i was making a new team today, and i have 4 of them down. i'll give the pokes and their roles:

gyarados => possible leadoff and DDance sweeper, takes EQs for electivire
starmie => spinner and special sweeper
togekiss => special sweeper and haxer, takes EQs for electivire
electivire => skarmbliss killer and protects team from electric attacks

like most people, i too would need a sponge/tank or two, but i dunno which ones. im think of hippowdon for a second layer of t-bolt protection, or a skarmory to absorb grass/ground/rock attacks.
as far as tanks go, the only i can see myself using is dusknoir to stop spinners. but then there is umbreon, which just rocks but cant find a role for it on my team (maybe a mean look-BPer?).
o i almost forgot about special sponges... but thats maybe bc i hate blissey :) and well, i cant think of any other useful ones ATM
input on this is gladly appreciated, ty in advance :D

EDIT: no legends too (ie. the regis, the dogs, etc.)

hmm... after seeing the mantine i think i would need a (p)hazer. however, a mantine wouldnt mix in my team, since i cant have that much of an electrical weakness
so maybe a hazing weezing? or a roaring skarm? or other suggestions?

Well if you want an anti-electric PHer, there's Garchomp with Roar. It's a ground type.

Garchop with roar? I don't see the point really, why not use something more defensive? Maybe a... Bastodion with roar, stealth rock, iron head, and iron defense? That was rather off the top of my head, but I think it seems rather okay. Or maybe curse instead of iron defense...?

i would do that set, but i would drop IH for rest. and then i may drop roar for protect. that is, if i were going to use him.. but i wouldn't. even though he has one of the highest combined def in the game he has 2 4x weaknesses. mainly being ground and fighting. and i REALLY doubt you will find a serious battler who doesn't have at least 1 poke with brick break/close combat and earthquake. on my team there are 4 with those moves. (i was thinkin of useing him when i needed a tank as well :D now he is just another dex entry)

This is gonna sound crazy, but maybe there is a way to make Bastiodon work.

It's with bulky gyrados usually, you'll probably need other pokemon for special cases, but gyrados switches into fighting/ground pretty easy, bastiodon can just tank whatever you switch him into then use 1 move, probably rocks or whatever and switch back when he needs to dodge one of those attacks.

Also remember both his weaknesses have No effect on certain pokemon, and pokemon like weezing and a lot of flyers take resistant damage from one and are immune to the second.

Now that I think about it bastiodon in sandstream could work if you also have like gliscor.

The issue either way is that you have to be a good player to out switch the opponent. The effect could be pretty good though. If you have the right evs/ivs you could switch in on gengar. reduce him to non stab neutral damage attacks.

Now do keep in mind this isn't exactly 'advice' this is me thinking out loud. uh now onto a more serious tone/

It's usually better to go with something tried and true, a pokemon with really good stats for tanking is umbreon, though now adays you need yawn on it. Bronzong is hard to use but still effective, good resistances can switch in immune to earthquakes.

If you want to work against an electric weakness you could go for physical tanks like Donphan and Hippodown, though hippo's sandstream may do more harm than good. Having a ground type will let you switch your flyers out of the way of stone edge.

Donphan has a lot to work with, like knock off, ice shard, stealth rocks.

I forget if he learns roar, you probably should have a roar/whirlwind pokemon somewhere.

Are you looking for electric resistor? If you do, use {quagsire} or {donphan}. Otherwise, if you looking for an attacker/defender, use {metagross}, {bronzong}, or even maybe {walrein}.

bleh... again, i need a sponge that can absorb electric (and grass, if it just so happens) attacks with ease. i also need a poke to take ground and (more notably) rock attacks.

Just don't have 3 pokemon weak to Thunderbolt on the same team. Even if you have something to absorb electric/grass hits, you still have half a team that's weak to Thunderbolt, and that makes your team less diverse and very restricted.

Well..he's not OU, but Claydol takes ground/electric/rock/fighting pretty well. That'd just leave grass, with in the case of energy ball and grass knot togekiss is resistant and has ok natural special defense. That's not a tank though, so I see why you'd like for more.

That's a tough one.
