As being one of those trainers who prefer to not use OU pokemon i was thinking of training a blastoise of either these two sets:

Blastiose@leftovers
Sassy, EV's (to get 350 in HP and 275 in both Def)
Rapid spin
Yawn
Surf
Ice Beam

Blastiose@leftovers
Sassy, EV's (to get 350 in HP and 275 in both Def)
Mirror Coat
Surf
Aqua Ring
Skull Bash

Personally I think they're pretty crap movesets so I was wondering if I could get some opinions on improvements/ other movesets and how to get them ie. Breeding Chains. As indicated i was looking for a tank version of Blastiose, not a sweeper

I don't know exactly how to improve it, but getting rid of yawn is an improvement in it's own little way. I think yawn is... well, quite yawn inducingly boring. I suppose it could force a switch, aka be a pseudohazer or whatever, but if it's for the use of sleep, it ain't that great. Maybe something else, but if you can't find anything else defensive, keep it.

I run a blastoise like this:

@(wake-up berry)
Sassy 252HP, split D's

Ice beam/HP electric
Surf
Rest
Rapid Spin

The first attack depends on team needs (garchomp ve gyarados) and then the STAB. Used primarily as a tank. Pretty sucessful with the rest chesto combo, and has downed many an unsuspecting garchomp. I have the benifit of the one I breed having HP electric 67!!! Are we ever going to battle again?

Thats basically what it does, they have to switch out or go to sleep.

KOL40 thats not a bad set with HP electric you could switch surf with ice beam and you would have a sly bolt beamer indeed. Looking at its movepool it also learns Aqua Ring. Is that and Yawn conpatable?

Use a tank set instead.

Blastoise @ Leftovers
Modest
EVs: 252 Def + Spcl Def and 6 HP/Spcl Attack
-Aqua Ring
-Protect
-Surf
-Flash Cannon/Ice Beam/HP Electric/HP Ground

With Aqua Ring and Lefties combined, thats 1/8 of total HP regained per turn. and Protect is for move scouting and healing. And with a powerful STAB move and a few over moves, its a great addition to any team.

Ice Beam covers Dragons which are too common these days, HP Electric for that fun little guy named Starmie. HP Ground covers your usual Electric Foe, its uncommon to have HP Ground so yeah. Unexpected attack!

I like that moveset, looks like it would work well. on the turn you use protect you get 1/4 HP back.

The EV's though, wouldn't you max out HP and Split the rest into each of the defences?

the generic tank would have maxed out HP and split the defenses, but sometimes you might want to buffer up one defense over another if your team is lacking a special/physical wall.

like, if you're lacking a physical wall, one may choose to buff up their pokemon's defense in such a way it won't hinder its ability to absorb special attacks (say, 252def/129hp/129spDef). this works in vice-versa as well with 252spDef/129hp/129def.

a pokemon like blastoise, one that is a bit lacking a HP, would like max or near max HP to tank well before investing any EVs in def/spDef

also, why go the wobbuffet-wannabe route? it does need leaf green/fire red to get counter, but it can be very effective today with choice users running around (even in the UU play):

Blastoise@leftovers
torrent
bold 252hp/129def/129spDef
mirror coat
counter
protect/rest
aqua ring/ice beam/surf

protect can scout out choice users while restoring HP with leftovers/aqua ring. however, rest is something wobbuffet can never have and ice beam/surf can keep opponents honest (or fail to do so) thinking that they can set up on blastoise.

I am pretty new to making teams, i am in the process for my first attempt at one, anyways i just traded for a squirtle and was wondering what kind of builds can a blastoise do for a team? he came with rain dance, what kind of team make up would make use of that?

Well, not a brilliant one to be honest, because the only thing Rain Dance does for Blastoise is power up water moves. Yes, that's a useful ability to have, but it's better on other Pokemon that get much more of a bonus, such as increasing Thunder's accuracy and taking advantage of Rain Dish / Swift Swim.

Really, Blastoise serves as a not-so-bulky wall that allows him to make extensive use of Counter and Mirror Coat, ensuring that, with good prediction, at least one of the opponent's Pokemon is killed off.

There are much bulkier waters such as Milotic / Suicune / Slowbro, and there are also better water type attackers. Blastoise, I'm aftraid, is one of those Pokemon that you'll only use because you like it, and you'll grit your teeth as you note another bulky water type would have survived the attack that just killed it.

I suppose it could serve as a supporter, with Yawn to force switches and make enemies lose their stat boost, or clearing the arena with Rapid Spin, but aside from that, it does very little in my opinion.

So much more negative today than usual...

This main site is an awesome Pokemon database, so don't be afraid to read up.

The movesets listed above your post aren't bad. The bad part is that Blastoise isn't as powerful as it was in Red/Blue/Yellow or even Gold/Silver/Crystal. And I think that's what Obsidian is saying.
