Wingull can't. Pelipper can.
Also I went with Destiny Bond over Safeguard, because although Safeguard is incredibly useful (and how!), not very many fighters in RSE really deal in status all that much, so I figure DB is a wiser investment. Safeguard was, as you probably assumed, replaced with Encore.

I will delve into HM slaves and other assorted sidequests next chapter. In fact, half the chapter is sidequests and funny lines, so it should be a good read.

Okay, nice choice. ;)

Also, for our slaves.. you could use Tropius with strength, rock smash, fly and cut and a random water poke. (preferably staryu for flash)

Thorne 2.0 does not like Babi, apparently. She doesn't like a lot of things.
...as subsequent chapters will probably illustrate.

<EvilPenguin> also why is your Golbat wearing a top hat, a tuxedo, and a monocle

Points of Interest!

The New Mauville conversation went something like this:

<@Ganon> hey DNA
<@Ganon> do you want to do something for me?
<+DNA> depends
<@Ganon> all you have to do is push the red button.
<+DNA> why don't you?
<@Ganon> lazy
<+DNA> so why should I?
<@Ganon> I'll give you a TM for Thunderbolt for free
<+DNA> I'm in

^It really isn't that hard to make me happy

An observant NPC notices my bicycle:

<NPC> Oh hey, you got that bike from GhostPony!
<+DNA> how can you tell?
<NPC> Oh, it's glaringly obvious. It says there on the bike...
<NPC> GhostPony, GhostPony, GhostPony, GhostPony, GhostPony, GhostPony, GhostPony, GhostPony,
<NPC> GhostPony, GhostPony, GhostPony, GhostPony, GhostPony, GhostPony, GhostPony, GhostPony,
<NPC> GhostPony, GhostPony, GhostPony, GhostPony, GhostPony, GhostPony, GhostPony, GhostPony...
<+DNA> FFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU---
<Ray> ...what was that sound?
<Crumpets> Dear me! It sounded like an explosion from afar off!
<Haberdash> that sounds pretty serious
<Sacrama> I hope no one got hurt

^I didn't get back to Mauville until long after they identified the body
on the plus side, free bikes for everyone!

Stalkers are doing it wrong:

<NPC> Number of collisions: 5 times!
<NPC> Total time: 1 minute +!
<+DNA> with a time like that, do you think I was trying?
<+DNA> and you need to get a better stopwatch
<+DNA> hell
<+DNA> I'm surprised your stopwatch works AT ALL since the battery is dead

^it only took me 3 tries after that to get the perfect 9.16 seconds

Checking some data:

<+DNA> so I heard that Pelipper is a good HM slave?
<+DNA> I am compelled to test this claim
* DNA checks
<+DNA> Surf and Fly. Not even Dive? WEAK
<+DNA> ... ...
<+DNA> THAT LEVEL 29 MAGIKARP
<+DNA> IT WAS GOOD FOR SOMETHING AFTER ALL <3

One Rare Candy later, I had my Slave 1.

Crumpets at level 28:

He promptly regained his composure. (Yes, I'm aware that's the wrong thing, but it worked in the original dolo, so hush.)

Crumpets at level 29:

<Crumpets> I appear to have gained my former purple silent glory. Most joyous day.

It's good to have you back, Crumpets.

And now for something totally expected:

<+DNA> hah, this line
<+DNA> Briggs: "Hey, Felix! You take care! And keep Alhafra safe from thieves and pirates! And politicians, too!"
<+DNA> "I doubt we'll ever meet again, but if we do, remember this! Neener neener neener! Neener neener neener! Neener neener bleah!"
<+DNA> too happy to be angry
<+DNA> truly, Golden Sun is the greatest game ever made

Haberdash just sighed and went to take a nap. Sadly I did not get Kraden to flip out. Better luck next time.

And now back to the regularly scheduled plot.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
okay, just back to the plot.

<+DNA> so guys
<+DNA> ready for my next crazy idea?
<+DNA> now that everyone is considerably more buff
<+DNA> except Habby
<Haberdash> I hate you ;-;
<Ray> what is it?
<+DNA> I have been informed that Brawly and Winona are optional gym leaders in this game
<+DNA> while it's too late to unfight Four Arms, I want to see if I can skip fighting Winona.
<+DNA> the only downside to this is that they may not let me into either the Elite Four rooms or Wallace's gym, but--
<Haberdash> do you have NOTHING better to do than test the linearity of games?
<Haberdash> if this screws up, we'll all have to walk all the way back to Fortree City from the eastern tip of Hoenn
<+DNA> don't be a whiner; we'll have Surf by then, so you can kick back
<+DNA> who's with me?
<Sacrama> I'm pretty sure we don't have a choice
<Sacrama> let's get this over with

He's learning.

<Porygon-X> hey DNA
<Kecleon-X> can we hit you up for an interview?
<+DNA> no

They, however, are not. As with the last time, they were defeated before launching a single attack. In other news, Dunce has shot off three Magnitude 10s since hitting Route 115. It feels good. Shortly thereafter...

<CMP> BRO
<+DNA> <3
<CMP> <3
<Ray> bromance renewed
<CMP> how's it going?
<CMP> your whole team looks pretty buff. especially that Shroomish.
<Haberdash> See? HE notices
<Haberdash> why don't you?
<Sacrama> s-senpai~
<Haberdash> SHUT IT
<CMP> It's been a while, but it looks like you have a full lineup. And that Crobat looks pretty damn classy.
<Crumpets> Indeed, fine sir. I must say you do look quite dashing yourself.
<+DNA> Crumpets is pretty amazing.
<CMP> no kidding!
<CMP> well, I'll let you get back to it. have fun!
<+DNA> see you round. you too.
*** CMP has left #route

Whattaguy.

All the junior trainers after Surf have Pokemon starting at level 26. That shouldn't be too hard, as my lowest level, Haberdash, is 27 (Ray is still the top at 32, and Crumpets is not far behind with 29). It's just mildly challenging enough to be entertaining, but nice enough to give good exp payouts. Simply perfect.

Route 119, with all of its tall grass, is next, but before I do, I raid an old man's garden of a bunch of berries...for the last time. I should feel bad, but I don't. I'm a terrible human being.

In the opening stretch of Route 119, there's a bunch of tall grass with a bunch of my fangirls in it. I know this because they follow me around and mimic everything I do.

<Sacrama> hahahaha BURN

There aren't any items worth mentioning - at least not yet; those are all across the bridge. All the trainers just kinda go down without much of a fight, though I miscalculated when I let a Koffing live long enough to use Self-Destruct. But, finally, I'm at the Weather Institute, and some clones are standing in front of the bridge by it, so I can't cross.

<KoN> Lookout duty is boring
<Meaty> ikr
<Meaty> we could be playing Vanguard
<KoN> you really need to stop talking about Vanguard, just once
<Meaty> hater
<+DNA> uh, I really hate to interrupt your guys' bromance,
<+DNA> but what are you doing?
<KoN> we're standing guard at this bridge, making sure nothing bad happens
<KoN> oh
<KoN> and stay away from the Weather Institute; it's not safe
<+DNA> you mean this large building we're all standing near?
<KoN> yeah, that one
<+DNA> okay
<+DNA> and where ELSE would I go?
<+DNA> you realize this is a dead end, right?
<+DNA> so if I don't go to the Weather Institute, where do I go?
<KoN> uh
<Meaty> you didn't think this through very well, did you KoN
<KoN> guess not
<Meaty> you would have thought better if you played Vanguard
<+DNA> I'm just gonna go inside and leave you two to it
<+DNA> have fun on lookout duty or whatever

Seriously, what else does a protagonist do at a dead-end? That's easy - undead it. Or unend it. Sometimes both.

There's this conveniently placed bed near the entrance, which is awesome, since we were all worn out from the trek, especially Haberdash (she has very little PP) and Sacrama (he has to take hits to do anything). The music is the same as Mt Chimney, which is funky, but I see it is because Magma Cult has staged a hostile takeover. I can only hope the Spoon Pirates will send backup.

I also notice there are a few female grunts-no wait, that's just KoN crossdressing. Looks like he pulled an HW. The female admin looks a bit familiar, though...

<Hurricane> wait, DNA's in on this?
<+DNA> did your nameless boss not inform you?
<Hurricane> He did
<Hurricane> I thought he was joking
<+DNA> He wasn't. It's me, in the flesh. To prove it, I brought Crumpets.
<Crumpets> Salutations once again, fair lady Hurricane.
<Hurricane> damn
<Hurricane> well, I know our leader wants you dead. like, you, specifically, dead.
<+DNA> yeah, I noticed. He has a big-time grudge against me. Who IS he?
<Hurricane> I'm not at liberty to say, but he really dislikes you, after Pearl.
<+DNA> so he was someone back from Pearl days. hm.
<Hurricane> I should at least TRY and stop you. But first...
<+DNA> yeah?
<Hurricane> the fact that I'm here
<Hurricane> not a word of this to PMJ, understood?
<Hurricane> I don't need him stalking me again
<+DNA> agreed

Team Galactic was pretty weird.

Magma Admin "Courtney" (who I'm pretty sure is just a clone of Magma Admin Shelly), as the game so calls her, has 2 Pokemon, a lv. 28 Numel and a lv. 28 Mightyena. Haberdash handles the first one, BARELY (Leech Seed is generous), and Dunce handles the second one easily. Hurricane and the rest of the Magma Cultists then quietly excuse themselves, their current op a failure. I think the last thing she said was "Move out, and watch out for the Spoon Pirates!"

The scientist dude there rewards me with a Castform, which I accept (after clearing out a party slot). It's not a mainstay party member, but hey, at least it comes with a Mystic Water. The "shower with gratitude" line would have worked better here than earlier, for obvious reasons, but alas, that is not to be.

And with that, I can cut this part here!

<+Lenny> hey wait aren't you going to fight me?
<+DNA> start of next part, you dummy

End of Chapter 6!

DNA's Team So Far:

{combusken} Ray lv. 34
{crobat} Crumpets lv. 32
{barboach} Dunce lv. 30
{wobbuffet} Sacrama lv. 29
{shroomish} Haberdash lv. 28

I'm well aware that Barboach evolves at level 30, but it gets Earthquake at level 31, and you'd be a fool to pass up on an early Earthquake.

Higher than the amount of Meaty clones, that's for sure. Not entirely sure why that is.
Probably has something to do with Vanguard and him being in the wrong line of work.

I'm in as the gym guide, and didn't know? Damn me.
DNA, I'm with you all the way, just because you picked Blaziken. I have loads of tips too, if you need any.
Also, if it makes you feel any better for being recast in this world, I beat Pride today in the finals of an OU tournament.

NOW ON WITH THE DOLO

That makes me feel so much better.
ON WITH THE DOLO
(which is when I write another chapter or two and space out when I post them)

The only real tip I need is where the best place to grind would be before the Elite Four (which I guess would be the same place as the best place to grind right after the E4 too). I'm thinking Route 117/118/110/Gabby&Ty, but if there's a better idea, I'd love to hear it.

No, I can't recall anything better. Hoenn is terrible when it comes to grinding.

Curses be to real life.
I LOVE DIS DOLO. It happen to stand for, "Don't only live once"? I wouldn't know.

Haybets. Definitely shipping the favorite characters.

And, YEAH, I HAVE A PARTTT IN DIS!
Insert my name where you mention the lovely Ralts you have the *cough* wonderful nickname for. It does fit in a sense. *Glances at username, icon, and...* Yeah.

Dolo stands for "Drunks only; live once", and it's funny you mention it, because Haberdash shipping actually is brought up in Chapter 7.
I do remember saying that you were Wally Gale's weak sexual object, so the next time he shows up in the playthrough, so will you.

Edit: Yep, I said it right here.

I wonder how Winona will turn to be. To be honest, I always liked Flannery's style (OK, maybe not only that), but not Winona. Given the few females you know, options are limited if you wanna keep her straight, but many if you wanna screw her up.

DNA's Dolo Run of Pokémon Ruby!
Chapter 7: That's Not How You Dolo

Before you ask - yes, this entire chapter is about people doing it wrong.

Weather Institute done; now to go up and down the coast getting all those items at the end that you don't normally get: Max Ether, Ultra Ball, and Leaf Stone. A little further, and I get asked something.

<Haberdash> can I ask you a question?
<+DNA> sure Habby. Go ahead.
<Haberdash> who are you and what have you done with DNA?
<+DNA> um...I'm DNA. What kind of question is that?
<Haberdash> you haven't played Golden Sun ONCE since the last chapter ended
<Haberdash> you got about 20 feet into the Western Sea, saved your game, and left it there
<Haberdash> and you've done NOTHING since
<+DNA> what if I told you that it was to spend more time with you?
<Haberdash> that's easy. I'm SURE you're not the real DNA now.
<+DNA> I keep digging myself deeper
<+DNA> I need a distraction so I can escape this conversation
*** Lenny has joined #route
<+Lenny> wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
<+Lenny> bikes are fun!
<+Lenny> oh
<+Lenny> it's you
<+DNA> yes it is
<+Lenny> good
<+Lenny> stay there; i need to fight so I can level-grind
<+DNA> and you picked me?
<+DNA> that's a horrible idea
<+Lenny> why?
<+DNA> you don't get any exp if you faint
<+Lenny> what makes you think that--
* DNA raises eyebrow.
<+Lenny> ...dammit
<+Lenny> is it too late to leave
<+DNA> WE'VE LOCKED EYES
<+DNA> WE MUST DO BATTLE
<Sacrama> SACRAMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!
* Sacrama battlecry

Lenny opens with lv. 29 Shroomish. I could have sworn he'd open with Swellow, but I guess that doesn't happen 'til the last fight. Sacrama goes first (I forget he normally outspeeds slow things), using Encore, messing up, and gets a face full of Poisonpowder. Guess I should let Crumpets handle this one. (He does, in a single Wing Attack.)

Next up is lv. 29 Numel, and I know that's definitely Dunce's job - one Surf and the thing gets absolutely floored. Lenny's last is a lv. 31 Marshtomp, and I'm positive Haberdash can handle this one. She does with absolutely no trouble - Mega Drain is a 2HKO and she doesn't even need to Leech Seed. This causes her to level up, but I must cheat her out of evolution yet again. Worry not, Habby. Only 25 more levels to go.

<Haberdash> you what?
<Haberdash> IF I HAD FISTS I'D BEAT THE CRAP OUT OF YOU
<+DNA> only 25 more levels to go.
<Haberdash> AAAAAAAAARGH!!!
<Haberdash> just give me a scone or something, Crumpets.
<Haberdash> I need to cool off.
<Crumpets> Of course, milady.
* Crumpets obliges.
<+Lenny> welp I lost
<+Lenny> this HM02 Fly will be of no use to me, so have it
<+DNA> you say this BEFORE you catch a Flying-type
<+Lenny> I didn't think this through very well
<+Lenny> why not go say hi to Pride or something?
<+Lenny> or say hi to your mother?
<+DNA> good idea!
<+DNA> I should go back home to visit my mother!
<+DNA> said no one ever

Sacrama is still kinda pissed at me for getting him poisoned. Fortunately, the Weather Institute is right there, so we go back to heal and keep on going.

The first trainer I see is a Ninja Boy, and Sacrama uses Encore to lock it into Swords Dance.
QUICK CRUMPETS KILL IT BEFORE IT GETS A CHANCE TO ATTACK
I have trained you well

Fortree City is as green as it is boring, mostly because I have nothing to do here. There is a good shop for Secret Base decorations, but I careth not. There's also a woman who gives away TM10 Hidden Power, but I right-right-left careth not. There's also a TV playing some program in one of the houses, but I...

<Kecleon-X> That's how we ended up in battle with DNA.
<+DNA> hold the phone
<Kecleon-X> In a dominating performance, we were flattened, rolled up, and tossed aside!
<Kecleon-X> DNA is ruthlessly strong...
<Sacrama> kinky
<Dunce> shh I'm listening
<+DNA> I'm waiting for the punchline
<Kecleon-X> ...I lost confidence in myself as a result of the encounter.
<Kecleon-X> We were beaten before we could launch a single attack.
<Kecleon-X> Ohhh... Snivel...
<+DNA> lolololol
<+DNA> get rekt
<Ray> isn't that what they said the last time we fought them?
<+DNA> yep
<Dunce> lolololol
<Dunce> get rekt

I thought it was illegal to show that much violence on TV--
wait there's more

<Kecleon-X> The Trainer replied "GIRL".
<Kecleon-X> DNA's Pokemon Barboach and Crobat... And "GIRL"...
<Kecleon-X> Mmm! That's deep! There's deep significance behind that quote!
<Sacrama> kinky
<Kecleon-X> It's no surprise - a good Trainer has good things to say.
<+DNA> >good
<+DNA> suuuuuuuuuuuuure

okay moving on
Something I'm reminded of: Counter only counters against the last hit taken, so when I Encore Fury Attack, it doesn't work that well.

A little later, I roflstomped P-X and K-X, except this time, I was sad, because 1) not only did they get an attack off, but 2) I didn't kill them in 1 turn. Disheartened, I declined the interview. Maybe when Whiscash happens...

<Kecleon-X> "GIRL"!
<Kecleon-X> Do you remember? That's the quote you gave us as the battle clincher last time.
<Kecleon-X> I never, ever forget stuff like that!
<Sacrama> kinky
<Kecleon-X> The last time we battled, you stomped us before we could brace ourselves...
<Dunce> kinky
<Sacrama> he's learning

Kinky count: 4

<+DNA> welp the GBA's low on power
<+DNA> time to play Golden Sun
<Haberdash> WHAT
<Haberdash> YOU CAN'T BE SERIOUS
<Haberdash> DNA GET BACK HERE
<Haberdash> ...DNA? hello?

(Though I only went a little ways up the road, I was quite serious)

<+DNA> CMP <3
<CMP> DNA <3
<CMP> so I actually dug through some of my old stuff and found a Silph Scope.
<CMP> it was all worn out, so I did a bit of touch-up work and it's as good as new!
<CMP> Not only will it let you identify ghosts, it will also make invisible things clearly visible to you! You will be able to see most anything.
<Sacrama> kinky
<Sacrama> this is the weirdest bromance ever
<+DNA> ignore him

And thus I got the CMP Scope as CMP flew off into the sunset, in a very manly fashion. This lets me push aside random Kecleon. Dunce gladly took the lead and KO'd it right away, gaining a level, picking up Earthquake, and evolving into Whiscash.

The next day...

<+DNA> hi guys, I'm back from Jupiter Lighthouse
<Ray> Jupiter Lighthouse from the start of the Western Sea?
<Ray> that's like...two whole plot points
<Ray> were you really gone that long?
<+DNA> I was detouring for Djinn
<+DNA> I was blocked from some, because bro, I can't even Lift

(the joke is that you can't get the Lift Psynergy in The Lost Age, until Isaac rejoins the party)

<+DNA> so what have you guys been doing?
<Ray> I was working out, and everyone else was shipping Habby
<+DNA> shipping Habby?
<+DNA> do you mean put her in a box and send her off, or...
<Sacrama> and that is why HabbyxCrumpets is the true OTP
<+DNA> ...ohgawd
<Crumpets> You surely cannot mean to suggest that my graciousness to a lady is basis for a romantic relationship?
<Sacrama> you're biased; you don't count
<Ray> you guys are ALL biased
<Haberdash> DNA MAKE THEM STOP
<Slave0> wasn't there that one guy that shipped HabbyxRay?
<Sacrama> that guy is dead.
<Slave0> how do you know?
<Sacrama> remember when we got back to Mauville, and the bike shop was a smouldering ruin?
<Slave0> ...oh
<Ray> ...dark.
<Dunce> You know what I think?
<Dunce> I think the only thing that comes close to an OTP is HabbyxDNA. I am not saying it's an OTP, nor am I saying it's really a pairing at all, but at the very least hear me out.
<Dunce> Haberdash seems to have an inordinate fascination with DNA playing through Golden Sun - even though it's an angry one. Each minute he plays that is each minute he doesn't continue his journey here with us.
<Dunce> On top of which, she is the only one who seems to mind. None of us do, at least not to as great of an extent she does.
<Dunce> While DNA does enjoy her outbursts of frustration, Haberdash also know that he will be the one who will come to her rescue. While Crumpets would gladly do so, he is rendered incapable of separating her from true forces of frustration.
<Dunce> The whole reason we are having this discussion to begin with is that Haberdash is the 'token chick', as it were. Thus, the rest of us have some strange need or desire to pair her with another member of the team, even though, more often than not, it is a pipe dream or even an impossibility.
<Dunce> And thus the discussion began. The easiest way to ascertain her 'OTP' was by process of elimination. Sacrama is excluded by virtue of starting this whole shipping conversation in the first place, for no other reason than to make Haberdash mad. I am excluded for having very little to truly speak on the matter - plus, Haberdash's first impression of me leaves much to be desired.
<Dunce> Ray displays no real interest in her at all, nor she in him, so he is out. That leaves Crumpets and DNA the only ones to have any favorable interaction with her. And I have already brought up the arguments why DNA is valued over Crumpets in this regard.
<Dunce> In regards to venting her frustration, this is because she has no one to truly talk with. In the previous Dolo run, Thorne had much the same frustration, and this was vented through Aphrodite, another female Pokemon on the team - true, the only other female.
<Dunce> Thus, in order to make Haberdash's life more tolerable, the next team member you capture, DNA, must be a female. And if it turns out not to be, THEN YOU MUST GIVE HER THE D...NA. The choice is yours. Choose wisely.
<+DNA> ...
<Ray> ...
<Haberdash> ...
<Crumpets> ...
<Sacrama> ...
<Slave0> ...
<+DNA> okay, whosever idea it was to call him Dunce, that was a horrible idea.
<+DNA> I'm pretty sure he just unequivocally proved that he was the smartest out of any of us.
<+DNA> seriously, when did he get so smart?
<Dunce> The heritage of a long line of intelligent Whiscash will do that.
<Dunce> The irony of my name does lend to it the element of surprise, which is always nice to have.

Seriously, that Whiscash is a genius. I blame Sacrama for the stupid name. Or the dead guy. I also blame Dunce for trying to hook me up with Haberdash. Seriously, what.

Later on Route 120 it starts pouring down rain, something that displeases Ray, so he takes out an umbrella and remains under it, emerging only when needed. Essentially this route will be business as normal, just with rain. Good for Dunce, though. Surf becomes a death sentence. There was this one Milotic that took a very long time to kill, even with Leech Seed + Stun Spore. Damn Recover. (I would have chosen Sacrama, but it was too weak at that point. Dunce ended up finishing it off, proving his whiskers were superior.)

Yes, I'm skipping Winona (or whoever her dolo replacement is) on purpose. I did say I would skip her and see how long I could go without the badge. It's strange how little I care about the people, or the items, or the beer, in this playthrough.

Well, until Ray evolved, anyway.

<Ray> yes, back at full power
<Ray> time to dolo it up
<Ray> DNA, do we have any weed?
<+DNA> dude, this is dolo
<+DNA> we use alcohol, not marijuana
<Ray> 420 BLAZIKEN FAGGOT

(it actually was 4.20pm in Central Time when he evolved)

And with that, everyone at the team thus far is at maximum evolution and/or buffness, except for Haberdash.

<Haberdash> I hate you
<+DNA> Only 23 levels to go.
<Haberdash> Still, won't you have to evolve the last team member?
<+DNA> It would still become buff faster than you.
<Haberdash> why do I even stick around ;-;
<Sacrama> oh my word, Dunce was right

Upon entry to Route 121, I witness the first time Sacrama ever faints. I'd like to thank Destiny Bond for knocking the Duskull out, and Encore for forcing it to use Pursuit. <3

<KoN1> okay guys we're off to Mt Pyre
<KoN2> sounds good to me
<Meaty1> we can practice Vanguard on the way
<Meaty2> awesome
*** MagmaCult has left #route
<+DNA> I bet this is some kinda hint
<Crumpets> Let us pursue them with all haste!
<+DNA> Not yet. Let's go to Lilycove first and rest.
<+DNA> At the state we're in, I don't think we can take on the trek from scratch.
<+DNA> We're not in a rush or anything. besides, we can detour to route 123 too.
<Dunce> Wouldn't that involve walking all the way back?
<+DNA> Yes it would.
<Haberdash> ...you're insane
<Ray> you're late to noticing that
<Haberdash> shut up and pass the weed
<+DNA> ha
<+DNA> weed
<+DNA> grass types

Then there was this deathly silence, followed by an UGH, then a rimshot. I didn't know Crumpets could play drums.

Route 121 also marks the appearance of the first fightable Pikachu in the playthrough (the other was named Pekachu and owned by an NPC). Dunce kills it. I will probably see it later at Mt Pyre and kill it again. I currently have no plans to go to the Safari Zone.

Lilycove City is the last city explored on mainland Hoenn, before going off to the islands. It's a big city, so after going to the center, I go around and explore a bit. Items I find are a Max Repel by the Lighthouse, a TM44 Rest at some guy's house by the beach, and a Heart Scale at the innermost part of the beach. People of interest I find are an old couple frenching by the coast, the Berry Master's daughter, the Move Deleter, the hotel where Game Freak is (but not Game Freak), Lenny (who I'll get to later), and a bunch of Magma Cultists.

<Meaty> There, Wailmer! Leap out of the water now!
<+DNA> hey um, dude
<+DNA> question
<+DNA> why are you doing this?
<Meaty> It's for the aquarium
<Meaty> for when Magma Cult makes its grand debut to the world at large
<+DNA> KoN was right
<+DNA> you ARE in the wrong line of work
<+DNA> with something like that, you should be with the Spoon Pirates
<Meaty> lol
<Meaty> any other questions?
<+DNA> yeah. those are Wailmer. Don't people usually train dolphins?
<Meaty> do you see any dolphin Pokemon?
<+DNA> good point
<Meaty> I thought so
<Meaty> now let me get back to showing Vanguard anime to the Wailmer
<Meaty> so I can teach them how to play
<+DNA> I'm just gonna go

The Magma Hideout entrance is currently guarded by 2 cultists. One of them says the Boss went off to snatch something important, but wouldn't dare tell me where. The other says the Boss went off to Mt Pyre, but wouldn't dare tell me why.

...Okay, so the Galactic grunts doing that is nothing new.

<+DNA> I know the perfect way to end this chapter
<Ray> do tell
<+DNA> we started this chapter with a Lenny fight, right?
<+DNA> we are in a perfect position to finish with one too.
<Ray> I like the way you think
<Ray> lgi

<+Lenny> DNA good timing
<+Lenny> I just finished a shopping spree with dolls and posters
<+DNA> could you be any more sexism-insensitive?
<+Lenny> blame Pride
<+DNA> you know what, I think I will
* DNA calls Pride
-Pride- <- Hello?
-DNA- -> is this Pride?
-Pride- yes it is

Words were exchanged. Very strong words.
On the plus side, I noticed Slave 0 picked up a Full Restore, of all things.

<+DNA> now that that's taken care of
<+DNA> I can fight you and you can go home
<+DNA> and you can change into more sensible clothes
<+Lenny> I agree to this plan
<+Lenny> these short shorts are starting to cinch
<Sacrama> kinky
<+DNA> tmi
<+DNA> let's begin
<Sacrama> SACRAMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

Now I know I'm right about there being a Swellow opener this time. As predicted, it is there, at level 31. Sacrama ends up Encoring it into a Double Team, which buys me a few turns, but will make it VERY hard to hit. At this point, the best option is to aim for an OHKO, so I choose Ray. Sadly, the Swellow got up to +5 Evasion and Ray never got a hit in.

<+Lenny> haha
<+DNA> evasion whore
* DNA soft reset
<+Lenny> wait what
<+Lenny> YOU BITCH
<+DNA> funny that
<+DNA> that's what the last dude dressed like a girl said to me too
<Sacrama> and I wasn't around for this?
<+DNA> you weren't even born yet
<Sacrama> fair enough

I know you're reading this, HW, and I know you're bitter.

The process repeats itself, and after 3 Double Teams, Ray gets a Blaze Kick in, putting it in the red. Lenny quickly swaps Swellow for a lv. 32 Numel, whom Ray Quick Attacks for about 40% damage. He follows it up with a Double Kick, which KOs the Numel. Lenny then tags back to the Swellow, which gets Quick Attacked, so that's 2 down, 2 to go.

<+DNA> haha
<+Lenny> priority whore
<+DNA> it could be worse
<+DNA> it could just be a skarmory whore
<+DNA> stealth rock spikes spikes spikes whirlwind whirlwind assist assist assist
<+Lenny> ugh don't remind me
<+Lenny> there is a special place in hell reserved for those people

Lenny skips right to the lv. 34 Marshtomp, which is eaten by Haberdash's Mega Drain. nom nom nom. That only leaves Lenny's own (lv. 32) Shroomish, who Crumpets takes care of.

<+DNA> gg
<+Lenny> gg
* DNA kicked Lenny from #lilycove

Next part, you'll see me at Mt Pyre.

End of Chapter 7!

DNA's Team So Far:

{blaziken} Ray lv. 36
{crobat} Crumpets lv. 34
{whiscash} Dunce lv. 33
{shroomish} Haberdash lv. 31
{wobbuffet} Sacrama lv. 30

And this is why Habby must never be shipped.

Besides, it's far too enjoyable to feed off her frustration instead.

DNA's Dolo Run of Pokémon Ruby!
Chapter 8: There Was a Lot of Walking Involved

I found out when I went to investigate the outside of Mt Pyre that I have no idea what to say around women.

<+DNA> excuse me
<Footloose> not right now; I'm break dancing

...or maybe it's just break dancers.

<Ray> wait, aren't we going to talk about the walk to the mountain?
<+DNA> why?
<Ray> for the sake of completeness.
<+DNA> okay fine.
<+DNA> nothing happened.
<+DNA> moving on.
<Footloose> tell you what.
<Footloose> beat me in a dance-off and I'll hear you out.
<Haberdash> I got this
* Haberdash spins on her head at top speed
<Haberdash> whoooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
<Footloose> whoa girl. you got skillz.
<Footloose> all right, what do you want?
<Haberdash> I need a female buddy
<Haberdash> all these guys are creeps
<Haberdash> except for Crumpets but he's still not easy to talk to
<Footloose> your headspinning skills impress me.
<Footloose> Very well; sign me up. Where are we going?
<Haberdash> whoo \o/
<+DNA> the plan is to beat up the Magma Cult
<Footloose> oh
<Footloose> THOSE guys
<Footloose> yeah, they're farther up the mountain. I can take you to them.
<+DNA> Sweet.
<+DNA> We can go climb the mountain, then go investigate inside.
<Footloose> I'm down with that.
<Haberdash> finally, someone to talk with!
<Footloose> um
<Footloose> shouldn't we help her?
<Footloose> she's still spinning
<Haberdash> I can't stop
<Haberdash> heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp

Crumpets ended up picking her up in the air until she finally slowed down. More to the point, Footloose, the fulfillment of Dunce's prophecy, is female, level 29, and of a Serious nature - though she only has 1 offensive move at present (Hidden Power). In-game, I managed to capture her while she had 1 HP left, which I'm happy of. And, while I'm thinking about it, I'll put up a list of items I found while in and out of Mt Pyre. Here you go:

Outside:
  • TM48 Skill Swap (visible from the bottom face)
  • Max Potion (right when the fog appears)
  • Ultra Ball (off to the left under an orange grave)
  • Max Ether (in the middle under an orange grave)
  • Zinc (down a path behind the first Magma Cultist, under an orange cave)
  • Rare Candy (down a path ahead of the third Magma Cultist, at the end of the grass)

Inside:
  • Cleanse Tag (1F; old woman)
  • Ultra Ball (2F; past the young couple)
  • Super Repel (3F; behind the male psychic)
  • TM30 Shadow Ball (6F; in front of the white grave)
  • Lax Incense (5F; in front of the white grave)
  • Sea Incense (4F; in front of the white grave)

<Footloose> There they are
<+DNA> so they are
<+DNA> hi guys
<KoN> DAMMIT DNA
<KoN> here to stop us?
<+DNA> natch
<KoN> FOOL! Magma Cult is best cult
<+DNA> as I have said before
<+DNA> while that is true, it does not matter.
<+DNA> PREPARE TO DIE

They weren't prepared.
Sacrama is nice and all, but he needs to beat himself near to the brink of death to do anything. And I have no Leftovers. Grrr.

<MagmaBoss> Not you again...
<+DNA> I believe that's my line
<MagmaBoss> It doesn't really matter. I have the Blue Orb now.
<MagmaBoss> Cult, let's move! To Slateport!
*** MagmaBoss has left #mtpyre
<OldLady> This is unbelievable
<+DNA> plot tends to do that
<OldLady> The Red and Blue Orbs must never be separated.
<OldLady> ...Fine! You take the Red Orb, and get that one back!
<+DNA> I will, but...
<+DNA> why didn't that guy steal BOTH?
<+DNA> I mean, if he messes up, he has a failsafe
<+DNA> ...this plot is very poorly designed, isn't it.
<OldLady> Most likely.

It's weird that I never ever noticed that before. Maybe it's because I was too busy playing the good Hoenn game (Emerald) that I never seemed to notice. There's an old man that tells the obligatory mythology story, about how land and sea Pokemon tried to destroy each other until the Orbs appeared. I was hoping for a name or something, but got none. All that's left to do now is to raid the inside.

The team is worn out from the Pyre excursion, so I double back to Lilycove and we take stock.

<+DNA> so
<+DNA> faceless cultmeister has ran off to Slateport
<+DNA> Meaty clone is still training his not-dolphins
<+DNA> ...and...
<KoN> What do you want with Magma Cult?
<KoN> Our boss isn't here! He's gone off to jack a submarine!
<+DNA> ...I misread that at first.
<KoN> ... ...Where did he go? Do you really think I'd tell you that?
<+DNA> I kinda already know. Let's see what your friend has to say.
<Meaty> What do you want with Magma Cult?
<Meaty> Our boss isn't here! He's on his way to Slateport City!
<+DNA> yes, he told me as much.
<Meaty> ... ...Why did he go? Tell you what, I'll tell you if you play Vanguard.
<+DNA> how about no
*** DNA has left #magmahideout

That went nowhere.

I decide to walk back to Slateport via Route 123. I will need Cut to get some goodies, so I deposit Sacrama in exchange for Slave 0. (Even though Sacrama is the lowest level on the team right now, he isn't as useful as the others, due to having to take a lot of hits in order to do anything.) I know I will have to go through this route at least twice to get all the goodies, but it's one-way anyway so the point is kinda moot. Not a big deal. We can take 'em.

Item list? Sure, why not.

Bottom path:
  • Rare Candy (req. Cut; off to the right near Psychic Cameron)
  • TM19 Giga Drain (by the berry patch; you need a Grass-type in the party)

Top path:
  • Leppa Berries
  • Super Repel (hidden, over a ledge by the Leppa Berries)
  • Elixir (just south of the Super Repel)
  • Calcium (by the pool of water)

Yes, that all took me 2 trips to get. Also, Shiftry: The only thing ever when Leech Life is a 2HKO.
I go to see if the Berry Master has more berries--oh, right. The Almighty Battery is dead. Before long we're at Slateport, and there's this very large crowd outside.

<The-Kaiser> We do plan to move ahead with the exploration, actually!
<Kecleon-X> awesome. thanks for taking the time to talk with us for a bit!
<The-Kaiser> No problem ^_^
*** Kecleon-X has left #slateport
*** Porygon-X has left #slateport
<The-Kaiser> wow, I felt nervous. I wonder if all interviews will be like that.
<The-Kaiser> Oh Hi DNA
<The-Kaiser> When did you get here?
<+DNA> not too long ago, actually. Just caught the tail end of the interview.
<The-Kaiser> Awesome Awesome
<The-Kaiser> I can share some cool news with you. We found this underwater cavern on Route 128.
<The-Kaiser> We think it's the habitat of a Pokemon gone long extinct.
<MagmaBoss> Ahem, we are Team Rocket! After three years of...
<MagmaBoss> wait, wrong game. Lemme try that again.
<MagmaBoss> Captain Kaiser, I assume? We of Magma Cult will assume control of your submarine!
<MagmaBoss> Your objections are meaningless! We expect your total cooperation!
<MagmaBoss> Just watch and learn what Magma Cult has planned!
<The-Kaiser> what was that? Sounded like a megaphone...
<+DNA> I swear I've heard that guy's voice before
<+DNA> It's annoying me I can't figure it out
<The-Kaiser> It's coming from the harbor! They're trying to jack the submarine!
<The-Kaiser> The same guys who were at the Museum!
<MagmaBoss> Hahaha...I commiserate with you! All that effort you spent following me here all the way from Mt Pyre...
<MagmaBoss> But now... No one can stop us! No one! Or, will you follow us back to our hideout in Lilycove City?
<+DNA> obv
<+DNA> it's not much of a hideout, now is it?
<MagmaBoss> True, but Cult Hideout sounds cool.
* MagmaBoss jacks the submarine
*** MagmaBoss has left #harbor
<The-Kaiser> Why would they want the submarine?
<The-Kaiser> They don't mean to go after the slumbering Pokemon at the bottom of the sea...
<+DNA> ...I'm pretty sure they are. He looks crazy enough to do so.
<+DNA> Plus, it's a cult. No cult is a real cult without trying to revive some ancient superfiend.
<Footloose> Well, now what?
<Footloose> we walked all the way back here just for them to steal a submarine.
<Footloose> What, are we going to walk all the way back?
<+DNA> ...yes we are.
<Footloose> Don't you guys know Fly or something by this point?
<+DNA> I want to see how far I can get without it. Plus, good exercise.
<Dunce> He is filled with regret even now, but he must see this charade through to its end.
<Crumpets> Nothing quite like an excursion through the countryside. Come, let us away! The plot awaits!

Most of that is actual game dialogue. brb more walking and picking up everything I missed on Route 123 the first time
(they hate me at this point)

Around now I discover that Footloose has Hidden Power Fighting. How fabulously redundant. Shortly thereafter, EP is still not done, I ignore him, so we sneak into the Magma Cult Base. I swap out Footloose for Sacrama, so he can catch up.

<+DNA> and of course they have a KoN clone about the entrance going in circles
<Sacrama> What's the plan?
<+DNA> I'm going to have a little fun with him
<+DNA> all of you, stay quiet
* DNA hides
* KoN walks about
* DNA starts walking about 3 paces behind him

* DNA taps shoulder
<KoN> WTF
<KoN> how long have you been following me
<+DNA> about 2 minutes.
<KoN> but WHY?
<+DNA> because it's fun.
<+DNA> also you're none the wiser.
<KoN> you have very strange ways of getting your kicks
<+DNA> says the guy who repeatedly proclaims that Magma Cult is best cult
<KoN> well it IS
<+DNA> we should fight now.
<KoN> we should.

The worst part about Magma Cult Base is that you can't run here. I guess that makes sense since it's an indoor location, but still. Also, Haberdash, stop missing with Stun Spore 4 times in a row.

Magma Cult Base is most famous for being the location of the infamous Master Ball. For the warp tile room to get to it, first take the one to the right. Then, keep taking the tile to the right until you get to the bottom of the room, in which case take the one all the way to the right. (To go back, just keep going to the left instead.) Other than the Master Ball, the items I find lying around are a Max Elixir, a Nugget, and a Nest Ball.

<Meaty> Wahahah, I grew weary of waiting! You owe me a battle, too!
<+DNA> is this because I was following behind you for the past 5 minutes?
<Meaty> yes!
<Meaty> now play Vanguard!
* DNA slaps

Going through that place felt longer than it actually was. Stupid lack of running. I'm finally at the end and beat up dude-looks-like-a-lady Magma Cult Admin Tabitha like it's no trouble whatsoever (because it wasn't - lv. 32 Numel, Mightyena, and Camerupt), who lied about stalling for time and being a cut above the other grunts - because not only did the fight take an unnecessarily long time, the jacked submarine went off somewhere else. Dissatisfied, I push him into the water and leave.

On the plus side, when I go outside, Not-Dolphin Man is gone! This gives me free reign over the ocean, as well as having Haberdash eat all the Water-types for delicious exp. Only 21 more levels to go!

End of Chapter 8!

DNA's Team So Far:

{blaziken} Ray lv. 37
{crobat} Crumpets lv. 35
{whiscash} Dunce lv. 34
{meditite} Footloose lv. 34
{shroomish} Haberdash lv. 33
{wobbuffet} Sacrama lv. 32

OK, how long do you plan to go without Winona? Or you just couldn't find anyone appropriate for her role?
