Does the Trainer ever fight his/her Dad (Petalburg Gym Leader) in Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald?

Yeah. If I recall correctly, he's the fourth gym leader.

No, Flannery is number four. Norman is number five. But yes, the trainer does battle their father, multiple times even, in Emerald.

You do, Norman/Trainer's Father is your fifth gym battle and source of the Balance Badge.
This is even foreshadowed in the beginning of the games after you help Wally capture his Raltz. After Wally thanks you and departs Norman resumes the conversation he'd begun with you before Wally showed up saying: "Of course I'm a gym leader too, we'll have a battle one day but that's only after you become stronger (insert trainer name)"



Really? How may I ask? (I've yet to finish any of the original games despite having all three, four if you count that I have two copies of Ruby).

Emerald was the first main series game to introduce the concept of gym leader rematches, aside from Giovanni. After beating each leader, their number would be added to Pokenav, and after you beat the game, you would have the opportunity to battle them again through Trainer's Eyes, like you could with normal trainers. The difference was that the rematches would all be double battles, and they would gradually get stronger over the period of four or five rematches, adding and evolving various pokemon over the process, before settling on a final team.

This was a feature that I was really hoping would return in ORAS, even if it wasn't in Ruby and Sapphire. This was no more disruptive to the originals than the events of the Delta Episode, after all, nor was it as big of a feature as the Battle Frontier would have been, but it certainly would have been interesting to see, especially with the addition of three new generations for the leaders to choose from. This would have even been the logical follow up to the idea that Groudon or Kyogre had changed Hoenn's climate enough that all of these new pokemon were able to start developing natural habitats within the region, so that a leader's new pokemon didn't have to be imported, which would have often needed the to be case for several rematches in the past.

This sounds interesting and I do believe I remember the Trainer's Eyes in Emerald in my first file which I had gotten farthest in but never knew Gym leaders also participated. It's been so long now though. I've reset it and spent a lot of time trying to SR a shiny starter. I think that's where I still have it.
